Kauai is one of the most popular filming locations in Hawaii. It’s hard to beat the island’s rich foliage and the mix of flat valleys and jagged ridges. No hike better captures that cinematic beauty than the Kuilau Trail. An easy, scenic walk that winds through dense tropical rainforest, wide-open valley views, and towering greenery that feels straight out of a movie set. As you soak in the lush vegetation and panoramic views, it quickly becomes clear why this area was a favorite filming spot for the Jurassic Park series.

Know before you go
This trail is often muddy. It’s Hawaii, y’all. Bring your beat-up trail shoes, go barefoot, or maybe just chill at the beach if mud isn’t your thing.
There are multiple places to park if lot by trailhead is full. The lot at the trailhead only fits about 4–5 cars, but if you drive a minute farther, there are plenty of overflow spots.
Alternate routes
Distance: 5 miles (8 km) out and back
Elevation gain: 750 ft (230 m) gain
Details: Offers similarly lush views with a slightly different angle on the surrounding valleys and ridges. It connects with the Kuilau Trail at the turnaround point, so you could extend the hike if you so desire.
The Trail

Let's begin.

The beauty of the Kuilau Trail hits you right from the start. Towering trees, jungle-thick greenery, and that feeling like you just stepped into another world.

One thing I love about this hike is how quickly the scenery changes. Early on, you’ll get some sweeping views of the valley to your left. This section is especially photogenic — even some flowers pop up here for a little color contrast.

The tree coverage is lighter than some other hikes on the island, so you get a broader perspective of the surrounding ridgelines and rainforest.

Eventually, you’ll reach a clearing with a picnic table. This is a great turnaround point if you’re short on time or just want a shorter stroll. My crew decided to explore a bit more.

Just beyond the picnic table, a short side trail leads to a small ridge. It’s a bit of a “choose-your-own-adventure” detour that rewards you with the most expansive views of the area.

If you’ve got a drone, this is a prime spot to send it up. It’s hard not to feel tiny in the middle of all this epic greenness.

Further along, you’ll pass another great photo spot — a sweeping view of a prominent ridge rising above you on the left, with a deep, lush valley sprawling out to your right. The contrast is wild.

You might encounter the occasional obstacle, like a downed tree we had to maneuver around. Just a reminder that trail conditions in Hawaii change constantly. Rain and erosion keep things dynamic on the trail.

Eventually, you’ll reach the end of the trail. From here, you can link up with the Moalepe Trail if you want to keep exploring. Even the ending point, marked by a wooden bridge surrounded by mossy stone and rainforest, has a certain quiet magic to it.

One last drone shot of that lush, Jurassic backdrop. It never gets old.
SS Reflections
The Kuilau Trail isn’t about crushing elevation gain or navigating knife-edge ridges. It’s not that kind of hike. But step for step, it’s one of the most lush, immersive experiences you’ll find. If you're looking to get lost (in a good way) in a green wonderland without needing to be a hardcore hiker, this one’s for you. And once you’re surrounded by those towering trees and misty ridges, you’ll totally get why Jurassic Park was filmed here.
